Quickfire #7

Photo fad and Neologism Quickfire

Background knowledge:

According to knowyour meme, photo fads “are staged photos in which the subject poses in a specific manner, often for the purpose of sharing the picture online” (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/subcultures/photo-fads). Common photo fads – search the aforementioned site – include Tebowing, Bradying, planking, teapotting, and owling.

According to Wikipedia, a neologism “is a newly coined term, word, or phrase, that may be in the process of entering common use, but has not yet been accepted into mainstream language” (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neologism). Common neologism include google used as a verb (i.e., just google it) as well as soccer mom. Neologism also occur through popular culture, such as Brangelina, metrosexual, wardrobe malfunction, and the ever popular planking, Tebowing or – more recently – Bradying.

The Challenge:

The quickfire contains multiple parts, but the essential element to is create a photo fad of MAETing and turn it into a neologism (note, the neologism is a long-term goal)

1.) Collectively you need to determine what MAETing [please seek approval from us prior to moving on from this phase – remember you want to capture the essential of MAET while representing MAET, MSU, and yourselves proudly]

2.) You need to turn MAETing into a photo fad – at first within yourselves, but feel free to get others to do it…

3.) You need to create a site that will house your MAETing

4.) You need to get it to catch on…

In other words, there are some immediate actions within this quickfire (i.e., determing MAETing, start the photo fad of MAETing, and create a website) but this is also a longitudinal quickfire over the course of the next year… Can you get MAETing to catch on? Can you turn it into a photo fad and make it a neologism – at least within the the MAET community?
